Biosafety can simply be defeined as avoidance of risk to the protection of the environment and to human health, as a result of the use for research and commerce of Genetically Modified Organism (GMOs), by instituting legal, administrative and policy instruments. In other words this concept refers to the need to protect human health and the environment from the possible adverse effects of the products of modern biotechnology.
GMOs refers to any organism which has been altered or produced through genetic engineering, or any product which contains such an organism, or any other organism or product altered or produced through genetic engineering.
Biosafety is one of the issues addressed by the Convention on Biological Diversity through the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. This section looks into how the application of Modern Biotechnology and use of GMOs is regulated in Tanzania.
